West Bloomfield History
West Bloomfield was originally maintained an active agricultural environment. Apple orchards were prevalent throughout most of the 19th century including the properly named Apple Island, located in Orchard Lake, which had an abundance of apple trees. Being centrally located in Oakland County and less than 30 miles to the heart of Detroit gave it access to both peaceful living and economic viability. Long before West Bloomfield became the suburban community it is today, tourists and summer homes were what encompassed the township thanks to its 26 lakes within its borders. It remained a place where folks maintained a second home or residents farmed the land until after World War II when cars became more readily available and land to build homes was extremely affordable. Like many cities across the country at this time, the population of West Bloomfield boomed. In 1950, less than 9,000 people called this township their home.
