Garden City History
Folks started arriving in Garden City in the early 19th century after a man named John Lathers purchased 160 acres of land from President Andrew Jackson; at the time, in 1835, the seventh president was in the final years of his presidency. The area became known as the Straight Farm House and Property; this 150+ year property still maintains the farm house that was built on this land. In fact, the farm house is the current location of the Garden City Historical Museum.

The origin of the name Garden City comes from the ‘garden city’ concept that was popular during 1800s in England. The idea behind the garden city was for these home sites to be split off into one-acre plots which were considered the ideal size to maintain a small farm. These one-acre farms helped bring people to the area and the land was fertile for growing various fruits and vegetables. It was not until 1935, almost 100 years since Lathers bought the land, that Garden City became an incorporated city.

Fun fact: Garden City was home to the first McDonald’s in the entire state of Michigan featuring a dine-in option.
